Chapter 46

FRIDAY, 10:37 A.M.

“What did they want?” Martha asked.

“If I knew where you were.” Paige told her of last night’s TV interview and the questions Investigator Tortelli and Dub Walker had asked. “They think you did it.”

“We didn’t,” Martha said. “I told you that.”

“They said they had evidence against you.”

“We weren’t anywhere near where Whitiker was shot and had nothing to do with it.”

“But the police believe you did.”

“They’ll never find us.”

“Where are you now?” Paige asked.

“It’s better that you don’t know.”

“But—”

“But nothing. If you know and don’t tell them then you’re breaking the law. We don’t want that.”

“It’s just so hard not knowing.”

“Just know that we are well and happy. In fact, I have some good news. We’re getting married Sunday.”

“Under your new names?”

“Yes.”

“You and Tim are already married. In God’s eyes.”

“Then this will be reaffirming that.”

“Can’t you at least tell me your new names?”

“Better you don’t know that either.”

Paige knew that everything Martha said was true, but she wasn’t sure she could live with it. Not knowing where they were. Not being able to call and chat any time she wanted. Not being able to drive over for lunch or an afternoon visit. It was just too much. Her throat tightened and tears stung her eyes. “I just hate this. Are you sure this is the right thing to do? Leaving me? Your friends?”

“I know, honey. I hate it too, but it has to be this way.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, we’re sure. We thought about this for a long time. You know that.”

“I wish I could be there for the wedding. Wherever there is.”

“You will be. In spirit.”

“With Whitiker gone, is there any chance you could come back?”

“It’s not possible. We broke too many laws. Taking pension money. Things like that.”

“Those can be undone. Pay some penalties. That sort of thing.”

No answer came for a minute and then Martha said, “We like our new life. Our new city.”

“You’re there? Your new home?”

“Yes.”

“I would feel a lot better if I knew where you were.”

“When all the dust settles, you will.”

Paige sighed. “Will I ever see you again?”

“Of course. It might be a while, but definitely you will.”

“I hate this.” Martha closed the phone and dropped it on the side table near the sofa. “Lying to her.” She felt tears gather in her eyes and her vision blur.

“It’s for her protection,” Tim said.

“I know.” She swiped the back of her hand across her eyes. “It’s just so unfair to her.”

“What did she say?” Tim sat down next to her.

“Claire McBride interviewed Investigator Tortelli and Dub Walker on TV last night. They essentially told the world we were suspects.”

“We are.”

“But—all our friends—what will they think?”

He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her against his chest. “We talked about this. Remember? We knew we would eventually be suspects.”

“That was talk. This is real.” She sighed. “All of this is real.”

He smoothed her hair. “I know. All the planning was like a game compared to now.”

She lifted her head away from him and looked up.
